What's Buzzing: Trevor Lawrence, Tony LaRussa, soccer breaks, new WNBA and more in today's edition.
Making the Grade (January): Acuña, Apollo, The Fiend, vintage, Eddie Vedder, Tool Time, Tiger, Drax, Dream Team, XFL & more
Like many collectors, Buzz is a fan of grading and knows that there are many reasons that collectors choose to slab cards. Sometimes it's to enhance the appeal and protect them when selling. Other times it's to protect an investment for the long-term or to protect for sentimental reasons. Or, it might be just for fun or curiosity about a potential grade.
Here's this month's grading diary ... a super-sized edition with 20 cards to open 2020.

SO CLOSE TO PERFECTION ...
The Card: Ronald Acuña Jr. 2018 Topps Chrome #193 -- Rookie Card
The Reason Graded: This one looked very clean to my eye and I figured getting some of my past Acuña pulls slabbed was a good move considering his almost-40/40 showing last year. Some of his cards are heavily graded to the point where they can be had for not much more than a typical cost to slab if not in top grades. Meanwhile, others aren't as plentiful and some can typically grade very well. I went with this one since it's not as heavily graded and it does tend to grade well. Plus, I just liked the photo here compared to others -- and those I already own slabbed.
The Grade: BGS 10Grade 5.5 6 6.5 7 7.5 8 8.5 9 9.5 10 B10 Total Population 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 45 367 95 14 522 Reality Check: This one surprised me a bit -- just one half-subgrade away from a BGS Black. Only 14 cards have gotten the perfect mark and this one is among an also-small population. Most cards here check in at 9.5s -- a solid mark and a perfect card to bat lead-off for this first MTG of the year. I expect big things from Acuña this year and I'll be slabbing him often.

Buzz Buys: Ronald Acuña Jr., New Yaz, Satchel Paige, Ferris Bueller, Aubrey Plaza, WWE stars & Ted Williams goes fishing
Buzz buys and busts a lot of boxes right here for Buzz Breaks, but one of my goals just might be to rip fewer blasters this year and talk more about cardboard that I -- and you -- might like. One way to do that? Simple show and tell -- present a few pick-ups and say why they captured my attention. Would they capture yours? I'd be interested to know -- sometimes they might, sometimes they won't and that's fine. It's a buyer's market out there with plenty of options and bargains as well as high-end gems to chase.
So, with all that said, here are a few Buzz Buys ... and this time around it's a super-sized edition to clear out some cardboard that's been waiting for its turn here.

BATTING LEADOFF ... AGAIN
The Card: Ronald Acuña Jr. 2018 Panini Chronicles Score Rookie Card (SGC 10)
The Price: $10.60
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: Is it really a shocker to see this guy batting leadoff here once again? If you're a regular reader you'll know this is the third straight time I've picked one of my Acuña pick-ups to start things off here -- and this time it's a high-grade copy from an affordable (for now) release that's jam-packed with Rookie Cards. I haven't ever submitted anything to SGC for grading, but I have picked off a few cards in their slabs when the price is right and the card is noticeably clean. In this case it was an affordable one picked off in a top grade just before he started heating things up this season. Boxes of many 2018 releases have picked up steam and this one is among them, especially on the hobby side where they are jam-packed with good stuff. I couldn't find this card in the pop report, but the price was right for me.

THE CHAMPS ARE HERE
The Card: David Price World Series Champion Autographed Relics (/50 max)
The Price: N/A as these are not available yet
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This guy's dominating postseason led the Red Sox to another World Series title and that means we get a few highlight cards in the base set and some rarer hits among the chase cards for this latest crown. Our sneak peek at this set arrives just after the checklist, which shows a handful of base cards for the Series, 14 World Series Champion Relics (/99 max), 12 World Series Champion Autographs (/50 max) and seven guys in the World Series Champion Autographed Relics set. These are typically not the easiest pulls as they are limited and the run for this one is larger than others due to popularity. Price is perhaps the biggest auto in this one with Brock Holt, Chris Sale, Christian Vazquez, Eduardo Rodriguez, Matt Barnes and Rick Porcello joining him. There will be Red parallels for all of these sets, too.Keep reading for five more interesting items in this week's roundup ...

Alex Rodriguez to sign at National Sports Collectors Convention
There's a new big name among the first wave of autograph signers for this year's National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago.
It's Alex Rodriguez.
Once baseball's highest-paid player, he's a member of the 3,000-hit club and a player who hit 696 home runs during his at times controversial 22-year MLB career with the Mariners, Rangers and Yankees.
