First Bowman Chrome autos, Topps Heritage autos and Rookie Cards in general for key players seem to be powering sales of wax boxes most generally these days for Major League Baseball.

Those shouldn't be too surprising, but in a world of seemingly countless options with autographs, serial-numbering or memorabilia pieces one could argue that less is more --- that oldschool simplicity is back.

And one could argue that the basic Rookie Cards from a hobby staple such as Topps Update (or Topps Traded if you're oldschool) continue to be an emerging go-to -- and not just for players such as Mike Trout, whose 2011 Topps Update card is a ridiculous seller if in top condition and still pretty impressive if just in a lesser slab.

Perhaps it's just a gut feeling with the arrival of 2017 Topps Update previewing last week and its date now known on the release calendar -- but the old Topps Traded sets of the 1980s and even recent years of Topps Update also seem like fertile collecting ground, too, especially if you're into graded specimens.

There will be some new features in 2017 Topps Tribute when it arrives later this month and chief among them will be some new autographs that weren't available back in September when this one was announced.

The biggest one? Former New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, who signed with the company in November. His ink will be found in Tribute Autographs and the Generations of Excellence Autographs sets.

Real cards in real time -- or at least the next day. It was a simple idea that became Topps Now that has helped in some ways transform collecting beginning on April 3, 2016.

Need proof?

There are 1,184 different Now cards now for MLB alone -- some with autographs and game-used memorabilia from the games that are depicted on the card. There are also Topps Now cards for last year's election and presidential debates, Now cards for WWE and for UFC and even real-time cardboard releases from AMC's Preacher and the Garbage Pail Kids taking on real-time scandals and viral curiosities. Oh, and there are other companies in on the real-time card business now for the other leagues, too.

You see this card? My copy of it cost me $15.

It was the summer of 1990 when a new premium set arrived upon the scene with seemingly red-hot wax that was only to be found in one hobby shop far from where I lived. I bought two packs of 1990 Leaf -- and oddly I landed two Ken Griffey Jr. cards, selling one of them for $7 to an adult while standing in line to enter a small card show the following day. That money was used to get a lame vinyl logo baseball for several members of a Rookie League team to sign -- one of them made The Show for some coffee as a Florida Marlin. It might have been the first time I sold a card for "real cash" and it definitely was my first time getting autographs at a show.

I never bought another pack -- and still might not have to this day. That was the sum of my 1990 Leaf experience.

With 52 autographs in every box -- as well as a posh party invitation -- it doesn't take a lot to see the dollar signs inside each $25,000 box of 2016 Topps Transcendent Collection baseball cards.

Those invites alone get a good chunk of change back (details here) and each case's 1/1 Kris Bryant autograph using one of the 65 historic Topps designs commands some, too. Those cards have sold for as much as $2,182 on eBay (so far) and all seven sold have gone for at least $1,000.

Meanwhile, the asking or bid prices in current auctions are over the $1,000 mark in all but one instance and range as high as $7,250 for those in the historic set.

But the priciest find found inside one of those 65 silver briefcases? It's much more impressive.
