This year's first installment of Topps baseball cards is almost here in the form of 2025 Topps Series 1 and with some sleuthing, we've made our picks for 12 standard cards that are stand out from the pack this time.

Sure, there will be more to chase -- and likely even more interesting photos among the planned variations -- but here are some notables from the base cards we've seen so far in advance of its Feb. 12 arrival -- get yours at the link above.

Taylor Ward -- OF, Los Angeles Angels
This is a pretty standard photo maximizing the looseness of a horizontal frame and yet it's still properly cropped and clean. Why would a simple image make the list? His Players' Weekend Victus No. 2 pencil bat, of course -- see it in action here.

Baseball America's Best of 2024 Awards issue is here and just like its Draft Preview it's jam-packed with everything one needs to know -- and it once again includes bonus collectibles.

Beyond the annual awards, this double issue also features player profiles and scouting reports for 150 top prospects in the American League -- but the bonus insert should add to its demand. The inserts are similar to Sports Illustrated for Kids trading cards, which are heavily collected and, in the case of iconic stars and newcomers, often quite valuable.

Soon, it will be time.

Packs of 2023-24 Topps Mercury Victor Wembanyama will be in collectors' hands along with C.J. Stroud Topps Now autos, pricey new Marvel and Disney Chrome boxes and even fresh shots at key Rookie Cards for Patrick Mahomes, Shohei Ohtani and Luka Doncic. Oh, and there can be prospect gems for Paul Skenes, Jackson Holliday and others on collectors' minds these days, too.

How? They're all part of the 2024 Blowout Cards Holiday Edition MegaMix (click here) which began shipping early -- this week instead of Dec. 18. It's a mixed-box case where, at worst, you'll land a mix of 20 blaster boxes but every third case ups the ante with some bigger stuff and a little less of the smalls.

Among the biggest finds? Like many collectors, Buzz is a fan of grading and knows that there are many reasons that collectors choose to slab cards. Sometimes it's to enhance the appeal and protect them when selling. Other times it's to protect an investment for the long-term or to protect for sentimental reasons. Or, it might be just for fun or curiosity about a potential grade.

Here's this month's grading diary here on The Buzz ...

THE AIR UP THERE ...
The Card: Michael Jordan 2009 Goodwin Champions
The Reason Graded: This is one I pulled from a pack of this Ginter-style rival throwback brand back when it arrived, and it's got an obviously appropriate background for Air Jordan. It's that simple touch (and it being a dunk shot) that makes this card -- in all its versions -- in some demand. This one had been in my "maybe grade" pile for literally years and I finally worked it into a bulk sub since the NBA season is here.
The Grade: CGC 10

Reality Check: It checked in higher than I had expected, though I tend to punt cards where the centering is just slightly off ... but those can still land a 10 like this one did. Ultimately I was good with any mark as, for me, this is more of a novelty slab -- about the only Jordan collecting I do is his baseball stuff. Interestingly, most copies of this card have checked in here -- that's surprising to me -- but with that overall volume still low that could change easily with time.
