Buzz Buys ... A LOT: Throwback to an era (somehow?) long ago
Buzz buys a lot of stuff these days and for a few reasons, really. Sometimes it's just bargain-hunting, sometimes it's just something that strikes me. And other times it's a lot -- a group of things -- and that has happened enough lately I figured I'd try something different as a regularly appearing item. Sometimes my lots will be wins, sometimes they won't be ... but I'll let you decide.

A PC THROWBACK
The Lot: 225-plus cards of former MLB player Nick Swisher (mostly cards from 2004-2010)
The Price: Not much more than a Chrome blaster box in the retail wild (with tax) -- check out Retro Rips hereKeep reading for more on this one ...
Making the Grade (Feb.): A Super Bowl lowlight, Tiffy Time, Wemby, NFL stars, The Punisher, two shots of Ali & much more
Like many collectors, Buzz is a fan of grading ... so here's this month's grading diary here on The Buzz.
GETTING EVEN BETTER?
The Card: Victor Wembanyama 2023-24 Panini Haunted Hoops -- Rookie Card
The Reason Graded: I'm basically casually ripping at best when it comes to NBA these days -- just can't collect it all at today's prices (and might not want to with that) -- but the holiday-flavored version of Hoops got me to bite a few times since it's got a good volume of stuff in a box and a pair of Wemby RCs on the checklist. Is this a big card in the big scheme of things? Nah, but the printing and cutting here was so clean I knew I needed to grade it. Why?
The Grade: CGC 10Grade 5.5 6 6.5 7 7.5 8 8.5 9 9.5 10 P10 Total Population 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 10 2 16 3 32 Reality Check: Because this should be the result more often than not as long as the centering is there ... and the stats here show that to be the case roughly half the time. The phenom seems to be getting better with time and once the wax dries up for even stuff like this there could be interesting trends that buck the idea that stuff is overproduced these days -- it is ... but not when there's increased demand for a popular player. I need to scout singles more for this guy and cards I like ... I think there's more potential here over time than people might think based on soft prices for raw cards. (Even if boatloads of his cards are already graded.)

Buzz Buys: Dogpool's debut, Kobe's dad, young WWE stars, vintage finds, Jack White's comic, movie memorabilia + more
Buzz buys and busts a lot of boxes right here for Buzz Breaks, but one of my goals is to rip a little less and talk more about cardboard that I -- and you -- might like. One way to do that? Simple show and tell -- present a few pick-ups and say why they captured my attention.
So, with all that said, here are a few Buzz Buys ...

DOGPOOL'S DEBUT
The Book: Prelude To Deadpool Corps No. 3 -- first Dogpool appearance
The Price: Under $8
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This was an impulse/curiosity buy once I saw Dogpool -- a character that I'm admittedly not that familiar with -- on this cover of Empire in advance of the Deadpool & Wolverine movie to come as well as in a preview trailer. Why? Well, one reason I grabbed this was that the lone graded copy of this book on eBay at that time had an asking price of $400-plus. While I know that's high, you never know what people might grab if the that pup steals the show or at least picks up some headlines alongside Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds when this one hits. (Weird thing have happened with Baby Yoda and Star Wars' Porgs in recent years.) This comic cover isn't exactly the same as what we're getting on the big screen dog-wise, but with the movie figuring to generate a lot of buzz and perhaps include a lot of cameos I've been looking at stuff here and there ... and I really need to go find that magazine, too. It's actually got higher asking prices on eBay than this book and has sold for more than $20. (It's a UK mag ... so it's perhaps not as easily found just yet.) The comic has had CGC 9.8 sales of $85 and $299 in recent months, too, so there's definitely some speculating ... and there should be. This movie will be huge.

Fast Five: 2020 Bowman cards that collectors can appreciate
This one is a quick idea for a new department here on The Buzz ... Fast Five -- a quick list under a simple topic that might offer a basic starting point for a themed collection. It's a basic list of five items that could be fun for a starting collector or a new way to add to a stash that might already seemingly include everything when it comes to cardboard. For some of you, it's probably common sense. For others of you out there, it's something to think about.
This time? Some collector-minded picks from 2020 Bowman.
A PERFECT CARD
Bo Bichette -- 2020 Bowman base set No. 52
For years as part of the current Topps run (1989 to today), Bowman was dubbed "The Home of The Rookie Card." That may be a tad overshadowed by the prospect sets these days and in this one -- especially since the Rookie Card logo change in 2006 -- but this card is a perfect one and he's a key rookie in this year's crop. Forget all those new hot prospects (we'll get to them), but my first hunt here would be a bulk lot of this card as they could be overlooked compared to others but with a good collector upside and potential if in high-grade slabs. (Especially once the bulk-rippers are done and boxes dry up some.) Aesthetically, this could end up being one of his best RCs of the year.Keep reading for four more making up the list this time.

DRAFT-DAY DRAMA PICK-UPS
Here's a spoiler for tonight's NFL Draft ... no matter where Tua Tagovailoa lands -- good or bad, high pick or low pick -- I'm going to be buying something on the affordable side. Why? I don't have an NFL team and I'm not sure I really want one -- my fantasy team is fine for that -- and my seasonal collecting football habit will be satisfied by stuff like what's found in 2020 Panini Prizm Draft Picks where he's on the box yet I'm 0-for-the-year finding him in any form. I don't really have any needs for the guys not in the uniforms that match his in this release, but tonight we'll find out where all of those other guys go and their new fans will start chasing what options they have for cardboard right now. It could be warmer than usual considering that there will inevitably be delays the rest of the year in some form or fashion ...whether it's just the cardboard in the short-term or the play, which is a possibility, getting pushed later into the fall. I have my team and my players I'll be looking for -- and it's a good-looking year for football cards across the board no matter where guys end up.Keep reading for four more making up the list this time.

A No. 1 CONTENDER ...
The Item: Kyler Murray 2019 Panini Contenders Draft Picks Cracked Ice auto (/23)
The Price: $3,499 Buy-It-Now (or best offer)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This one's serial-numbering is his uni number and his potential selection spot in tonight's NFL Draft. Is the price out of whack? Probably not given how some QBs have sold in recent years when it comes to rarities and autographs. It's also not the highest-priced of his cards on eBay right now. The only drawback here is that his card won't note his new NFL team -- these arrived in packs this week -- but he's got a pretty successful Oklahoma history and a strong fan base there that will have their eyes on this one now -- and later -- no matter where he goes.

SENIOR BOWL GAMER ... OF A HALL OF FAMER
The Item: Brett Favre 1991 Senior Bowl game-used and signed jersey
The Price: $22,000 Buy-It-Now (or best offer)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: The Senior Bowl has a rich history and a number of college stars who went on to NFL greatness after the big game -- and there are many who didn't. While you can find players' Senior Bowl jerseys placed into cardboard in recent years, a past gamer might be much rarer than you think. And one from a player of Favre's caliber? Well, that's an elite piece. This one came directly from Favre himself after being put on the market via Hunt Auctions in 2017. These aren't team colors that we most commonly associate with this Hall of Famer, but it's a one-of-a-kind piece compared to many potential gamers for his pro teams. It's impressive.

Carding Baseball America's MLB Prospects Hot Sheet (Aug. 27)
Here's a look at the top five players on this week's Baseball America Top MLB Prospects Hot Sheet and their seasons so far. It's a little something to help those who might want to dabble with prospecting -- some basics on their baseball cards alongside a highlight line from those more scouting-minded. We may not do this every week, but we'll check in on BA's top crop from time to time for the remainder of the season.
1. Kyle Tucker, OF, Astros — Triple-A Fresno Grizzlies
Season so far: Hitting .327 with 25 doubles, 23 homers, 86 RBI and 20 SBs in 93 MiLB games (Hit .154 in 20 games in Houston.)
Baseball America’s highlight line: "Tucker has not hit as a big leaguer yet ... but every time the Astros send him back down, he goes right back to hitting. Tucker hit six home runs in a four-game stretch this week. His last on Saturday was his most dramatic, as the three-run home run in the ninth capped off a five-run, ninth-inning comeback that clinched the Pacific Coast League’s Northern Division title. Tucker now has 23 home runs and 20 steals in the PCL, giving him a 20-20 season despite the fact that he spent nearly a month in the majors."
CARDBOARD BASICS
Approximate card total (so far): 700
First Chrome auto: 2015 Bowman Draft
One auto to consider: 2012 Elite Extra Edition (and USA Baseball set)
Buzz’s card take: He's pushing 300 different certified autographs and his time in MLB this season might have softened the demand for the biggest ones a bit but he still figures to be a pricey player on those key cards. I'd look into his 2012 USA Baseball autos from when he was with the 15U team first (bargain hunting) before chasing the first Chromes.Keep reading for the rest of the top five ...
Luis Severino's red-hot season heats up his cardboard
It might be easy to overlook the New York Yankees pitching staff with all those young sluggers and other big boppers in the Bronx, but there's one arm clearly establishing himself this summer as he's in the midst of a career year and should have dominating season totals by year's end.
It's Luis Severino.
The 24-year-old right-hander is 13-2 with a 1.98 ERA this season -- tops in the American League and nearly the best in MLB right now -- and he's got 138 strikeouts in 118 innings atop that. His next victory will tie his career-high set last season and he's by far the top arm on the team -- Masahiro Tanaka is second with just seven victories this year.
And all this success should bode well for his cardboard, which can still be found with relative ease.

California man discovers Shohei Ohtani Superfractor auto in 2018 Bowman hobby box -- that he'd set aside for last week
The Big One has been found.
The 2018 Bowman Shohei Ohtani Superfractor autograph has been pulled from a hobby box of the baseball cards by John Muheim, a business partner at Spectrum Photography in Orangevale, Calif., who is a St. Louis Cardinals fan and a long-time collector.
"I've been collecting since 1999-2000 and have had some good fortune over the years. But this is the whale," Muheim said. "I've opened three jumbos and this was the fourth regular hobby box. ... I plan to grade it and have already talked with Beckett Grading Services. I have lots of ideas after that and definitely have a big decision to make. Selling is of course at the top of the list."
